After almost 3 years of development, the lightweight desktop environment, Xfce has released it’s version 4.12. This version is still based on GTK2 but it brings many new features. These include a new window switcher dialog (with window previews), improved support for Client-Side Decorations (CSDs), improved window tiling mode, HiDPI Support, intelligent panel hiding feature, better multi-monitor support, theme & icon preview in appearances dialog, redesigned Power Manager dialog, new version of core apps and more.

If you’re interested I encourage you to go through the Xfce 4.12 feature tour and check the release announcement.

Installation

To use it on Xubuntu / Linux Mint Xfce there’s an Xfce 4.12 PPA for Xubuntu: https://launchpad.net/~xubuntu-dev/+archive/ubuntu/xfce-4.12. However please note that the packages are from the development version of Xfce 4.12, they’ve not updated yet. I expect them to be updated in the following days, though.
If you already have Xfce installed then you can upgrade with these commands:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:xubuntu-dev/xfce-4.12
sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get dist-upgrade

If you’re yet to install Xfce, run this:

sudo apt-get install xfce4
